Acne is definitley a four letter word for those who suffer with it. Acne is a disorder of the pores. Normal pores shed about one layer of dead skin cells in a pore, a day. Acne- prone skin sheds up to 5 layers of dead skin cells a day and the body just can’t keep up! Skin will act much like a clogged drain and clog up and form blackheads and congestion.
There are many myths that surround the causes of acne and let me just dispell a few. Acne is not caused by too much sex or too little. Chocolate doesn’t cause it, and sadly, it’s not exclusive to teenagers. Another myth that we all tend to believe is that all dermatologists know how to cure it. Many derms don’t specialize in acne.
When working with clients to clear up their acne I remind them that it will take between 3-6 months to get their acne under control. The reason it takes so long is because it takes between 30-90 days for a lesion to surface. The ones that got started before you began your acne home care, have yet to surface. Patience is key.
As a new client whose focus is acne treatment, we’ll sit down and do a thorough consultation that will discuss all acne contributors and you’ll learn the proper steps to clearing your skin. (It’s more than just washing and hydrating) Learning how to care for your acne prone skin is paramount.
Here’s a little insight as to what foods have been linked to acne.
milk, cheese, whey or soy protein shakes, soy, seafood, shellfish, algae, miso soup, seaweed (sushi), iodized foods, peanut butter, organ meats.
In addition to foods, there are prescription drugs, household products and skin care products that could be exacerbating your acne. The key is to educate yourself & when you know better you’ll do better.
Acne can be embaressing, depressing, and just downright frustrating. I’d love to be able to help you get your skin on the right path.
Be your own type of beautiful,
Nikki
