It wasn’t long ago that I attended my first IMATS show. Now for those of you not in the beauty biz, that would be International Make-up Artist Trade Show. This show is 3 fun filled days of lip gloss, drag queens, and , of course, lots and lots of makeup! I had dreamed of attending this show for many years and contemplated hopping on a plane and attending the Vancouver or New York show.

I had long imagined seeing many trendy people with beautiful makeup. The eyeshadows, lip colors and lashes…I was like a kid dreaming of Christmas morning. What I never imagined was that these people, who were so knowledgable and talented with a makeup brush and colors, would have been so neglectful of their skin. I walked around the trade room floor with a good friend of mine (who also happens to be an esty) and I finally confessed to her. “I never expected that there would be so many in this profession with such problem skin.”

Having acneic skin is never easy, then compounding the problem with comedogenic products almost makes it a merry go round you can’t get off. “I need the foundation and concealer to cover the acne lesions, but the foundation and concealer are causing more breakouts! ” YIKES

I love wearing makeup…I love changing it up everyday and enhancing my eyes or lips, I can’t image trying to “create” smooth skin when the texture of my skin was anything but. I think back to Sistine Chapel and I wonder, would Michelangelo even have attempted to create such splendor without first having prepared the canvas ( or ceiling) first?

I know that acne can happen to any of us (even I’ve had an experience with it). It can zap your confidence, your $$$ (trying every over the counter remedy), and hope.
