Your Skin Is What You Eat

Let me be blunt…healthy skin begins with a well balanced diet. Do you remember the the old saying, “you are what you eat?” Well it’s true ! Your body can’t produce healthy skin without proper nutrients. On the flip side of the same coin, proper nutrition doesn’t always guarantee healthy skin, but it definitely improves your odds.

Our skin has six functions. One of those functions happens to be excretion. What that means to your skin is that toxins and unwanted chemicals will be excreted through your pores. (not always a pretty thought !)Example – Have you ever smelled someone who went on a bender the previous night? That person may have showered and changed and yet still smells like a brewery. That’s because those toxins are being excreted through the pores. The same applies to the foods we eat and the things we drink.

Don’t get me wrong, one cup of coffee or an occasional Mickey D’s isn’t going to ruin your skin, but when coffee is your main source of fluids for the day and fast food is a staple in your diet, your skin is going to start looking a little lack luster.

There is no magic pill for radiant skin. The best way to get all the nutrients that a glowing complexion needs is through the foods we eat.  I know that it seems redundant, but referring to the USDA’s food pyramid is very helpful. The one thing that I cannot stress enough…drink lots and lots of water to flush your system out.
